A los fieles de la Diócesis de Hwange:

“Señor, Hazme un instrumento de tu paz”

Queridos cristianos:

La paz y las bendiciones del Señor Resucitado estén con vosotros.

Nosotros, el Obispo y los sacerdotes de la diócesis de Hwange hemos estado rezando y reflexionando sobre la situación actual de nuestro país, y queremos compartir con vosotros nuestros pensamientos, nuestros sentimientos y nuestra preocupación en este momento de incertidumbre y ansiedad. Estamos juntos en esta situación y sabemos que el Señor está caminando con nosotros como lo hizo con aquellos discípulos que estaban tan preocupados en el camino hacia Emaús (Lc. 24,13ss).

Son dignas de alabanza la calma y la paciencia que habéis demostrado durante y después de las recientes elecciones armonizadas de 2008.

Continuemos con el mismo espíritu mientras esperamos y rezamos por una rápida solución a la presente incertidumbre en la que nos encontramos. Dice el Papa Benedicto XVI:

“ Pero también la capacidad de aceptar el sufrimiento por amor del bien, de la verdad y de la justicia, es constitutiva de la grandeza de la humanidad porque, en definitiva, cuando mi bienestar, mi incolumidad, es más importante que la verdad y la justicia, entonces prevalece el dominio del más fuerte; entonces reinan la violencia y la mentira ” (Encíclica Spe Salvi N. 38)

Si permanecemos unidos en el Señor y abiertos unos a otros, dejando de lado nuestras diferencias étnicas y nuestra afiliaciones políticas, así como nuestro status socio económico, entones estaremos seguros de que la justicia y la paz prevalecerán. La segunda lectura del pasado domingo (el quinto de Pascua) nos recuerda nuestra vocación cristiana: que somos “linaje escogido, sacerdocio regio,, nación santa, pueblo adquirido en posesión para cantar las alabanzas de Dios que os llamó de las tinieblas a la luz admirable” (1 Pe. 2,9)

Nos preocupa el constatar que este espíritu se ha debilitado en algunas de nuestras comunidades por causa de la intolerancia, el miedo, la intimidación, el abuso de poder y la búsqueda de venganza. Esto no está de acuerdo con nuestros valores cristianos como familia de Dios.

Nosotros, vuestros pastores os urgimos a que os refrenéis de toda forma de violencia ya extender la caridad, el perdón y la tolerancia a todos los miembros de la comunidad sea cual sea su afiliación, Así seremos sal de la tierra y luz del mundo (Mt. 5,13-14)

Como Iglesia estamos llamados a sanar, a reconciliar, a animar y transmitir esperanza. Nuestro auxilio viene del Señor (Cf. Salmo 121,2)

Queremos que este mensaje sea una expresión de solidaridad con los afectados y que más sufren en esta situación.

Con el espíritu de la plegaria de San Francisco de Asís – “Señor haznos instrumentos de tu paz” --, sigamos rezando por nuestro país como nos ha pedido la Conferencia Episcopal en su carta pastoral “Dios escucha el clamor de su pueblo” “5 de abril, 2007) Buscar la mejor manera de hacerlo en nuestras parroquias.

Que Maria nuestra Madre nos sostenga y acompañe con sus oraciones. Y que el Señor os bendiga a todos.

To the faithful of the Diocese of Hwange

"Lord, make me an instrument of your peace"

Dear Christians,

The peace and blessings of the Risen Lord be with you.

We, the Bishop together with the priests of the Diocese of Hwange, have been praying and reflecting on the present situation in our country, and want to share with you our thoughts, our feelings and our concern in this moment of uncertainty and anxiety. We are together in this situation and we know that the Lord is walking with us as he did with those disciples who were in distress on their way to Emmaus (see Lk 24: 13ff ).

The calm and patience you showed before, during and after the recent 2008 harmonized elections are praiseworthy.

Let us continue living in the same spirit while we wait and pray for a quick solution to the present uncertainty in which we find ourselves. Pope Benedict XVI says,

"The capacity to accept suffering for the sake of goodness, truth and justice is an essential criterion of humanity, because if my own well-being and safety are ultimately more important than truth and justice, then the power of the stronger prevails, then violence and untruth reign supreme"(Encyclical Letter "In Hope We Are Saved", no 38).

If we remain united in the Lord and open to one another, putting behind us our ethnic differences and political affiliations, as well as our socio-economic status, then we are certain that goodness and justice will prevail. The second reading of last Sunday(the fifth Sunday of Easter), reminds us of our Christian vocation: that we "are a chosen race, a kingdom of priests, a holy nation, a people to be a personal possession to sing the praises of God who called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light" (I Peter 2: 9).

We note with concern that this spirit has been weakened in some of our communities through intolerance, fear, intimidation, abuse of power and seeking of revenge. This is not in accordance with our Christian values as the family of God.

We, your shepherds, urge you to refrain from any form of violence and to extend charity, forgiveness and tolerance to all the members of the community, regardless of their affiliation. In this way we shall be the salt of the earth and the light of the world (Mt 5:13-14).

As the Church we are called to heal, to reconcile, to encourage and give hope. Our help comes from the Lord (see Psalm 121:2).

May this message be an expression of our solidarity with those who are affected and suffering most in the current situation.

In the spirit of the prayer of St Francis of Assisi - "Lord make us Instruments of your peace"--, let us continue praying for our country as the Bishops' Conference asked us to do in their Pastoral Letter "God Hears the Cry of the Oppressed"(5th April 2007). See how best this can be done in our parishes.

May Mary our Mother sustain and accompany us with her prayers. And may the Lord bless you all.
